US-based Thrustmaster has received a contract from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for the supply and installation of multiple sets of 5MW azimuth thrusters for several drillships.
The value of the deal and the quantity of units were not disclosed; however, it was revealed that each vessel will use six underwater mountable thrusters for dynamic positioning.
The drillships are being built at HHI's shipyard in Ulsan, Korea, and will be able to drill in water depths of up to 10,000ft.
Each thruster will operate with a 5,000kW variable speed electric motor and can generate 90t of open water thrust in any horizontal direction.
The thrusters can also hold the vessel stationary during drilling operations in waters with a 1.5kts current, a 20ft wave height, and 50kts wind speed.
The thrusters are manufactured at Thrustmaster's facilities in Houston, Texas, while the vessels will be owned and operated by Diamond Offshore. |
