The principle is based upon the mass differences of water caused by temperature differences. Water with a higher temperature has a lower specific mass then colder water. During the running of the power source, the water in the sea chest is heated by the hot engine cooling water. As a result of the reduction in specific mass, the colder water from outside will force the hot water out of the sea chest. The pressure of this system only amounts to several tenths of mbar.

Fore and aft: By this way of installation the sea chest does not come so close to the ship's centerline and would appear to take up less space.		Abeam: This way of installation is the most used because the boxcooler can be installed between the existing frames of the ship.

我曾装过一条船的这种冷却器，就像是海底门冷却器。很麻烦，还要磨，面积很大，很花人工。
